Some Notes on Executive Dashboards

A variety of observations on dashboards, not just "executive dashboards", whatever that may mean. The words "executive" and "enterprise" are used often with really squishy interpretations. Anyway, I dig the thoughts in here.

I like this notion of “Player scoreboards” vs “Coach Scoreboards”. It reminds me that every single dashboard is, implicitly, an exercise in incentive design. By choosing what goes into the dashboard you’re emphasizing what’s important, and what’s not.

I’m a strong believer that every service team in a software organization should have a dashboard. They own it, create it, maintain it, and make sure it is published and discoverable. They can’t all be experts at making them, so there should be some shared expertise to help with best practices. 📊
