# From BFS to ZFS: past, present, and future of file systems - Host: [arstechnica.com](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/hosts/arstechnica.com/) - Saved: March 17, 2008 (2008-03-17T05:58:00Z) - Record: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/32f7ecdce34d/ - JSON: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/32f7ecdce34d.json ## From the page (probably an excerpt, not Jamie's words) This article will start off by defining what a file system is and what it does. Then we'll take a look back at the history of how various file systems evolved and why new ones were introduced. Finally we'll take a brief glance into our temporal vortex and see how file systems might change in the future. We'll start by looking at the file systems of the past, then we'll look at file systems used by individual operating systems before looking at what the future may hold. ## Facts - Kind: [Page](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/kinds/page/) ## Same host - [You can't always judge an eBook by its cover: a review of the Amazon Kindle](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/0f471202d688/) (arstechnica.com, November 26, 2007) - [OpenID and DataPortability.org to gain major support](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/22b65fc97858/) (arstechnica.com, January 9, 2008) - [Chinese official on SMS voting: txtng votes ripe 4 abuse](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/384ca64789fe/) (arstechnica.com, March 5, 2008) - [The night the IETF turned off IPv4](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/86c0870f03af/) (arstechnica.com, March 13, 2008) - [Metallica "ear spanks" management, reinstates online reviews](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/892cc3a97081/) (arstechnica.com, June 12, 2008) ## Saved the same week - [New Camera - Canon Powershot G9](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/478a2180307a/) (panographic.wordpress.com, March 17, 2008) - [Question your work](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/4ed4d1feb320/) (37signals.com, March 17, 2008) - [Dopplr tracks your Carbon Footprint](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/96a867c22c8c/) (cubicgarden.com, March 18, 2008) - [Google Maps, Wiki-Style](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/aefb9f485f08/) (techcrunch.com, March 18, 2008) - [#90 Dinner Parties](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/e3f6e977b78c/) (stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com, March 18, 2008) ## Elsewhere - Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2008/03/past-present-future-file-systems/
