  "note": "As a relatively new owner of an Eight Sleep Pod this article caught my eye.\n\n> The top of Eight Sleep's terms of service states \"At Eight Sleep we pledge to respect your privacy and to keep your data safe. We only collect data that helps us improve our products and services.\" Both Eight Sleep’s privacy policy and terms of service then go on to note that the company collects a huge amount of data that can be used for a wide variety of purposes, including marketing, retargeting, and scientific studies. It can also, apparently, be used by the CEO for commenting on the day’s tech news. \n\nWhen a product is free I know to take a pause and look at how they use data. If I am not paying, someone is, and I want to know why. Then you have a product like the Eight Sleep that costs $2,295 and has an annual subscription fee as well. Of course it uses data, but I'd like to think that given the purchase and subscription my data is used sparingly to provide the value I paid for. \n\nThis is a great example of why we need privacy legislation. Managing and protecting our data isn't going to happen any other way. There is so much complexity and legalese for companies to hide behind. ",
