When I was a kid a good friend of our family, Gordon Dubovoy, was into three things that he shared with me: Chess, Astronomy, and Short Wave Radio. Gordon taught me how to play Chess and suffered many poor games of chess with me. I’m still not very good at chess. He also built his own telescope and a couple of times we went to his farm and setup the telescope and looked at the stars in the night sky. He also had a very long antennae at his farm and a powerful short wave radio. He had a map of the world with pins of stations he had tuned in. I remember being there and slowly moving the dials. All these different languages would come in and then we'd try to figure out where the signal was coming from. It seemed magical that you could hear signals from so far away.

Now you can pull up a website like this and click a button to listen. It is on a map so you know exactly where it is. It isn't nearly as magical as that old shortwave radio was, but it is still incredible that we can make the world so small.
