  "note": "Fry's Electronics is, err, was, an institution for computer hobbyists for years. It is sad to see them closing the doors. Fry's wasn't in Minnesota so I couldn't go there, but it was so well known of a destination that we made a visit to the Palo Alto Fry's a part of celebrating [MarketWatch being in the Windows 2000 launch](https://www.thingelstad.com/2008/05/08/flashback-marketwatch-in.html). \n\nOm Malik [has a great writeup on why Fry's was so important](https://om.co/2021/02/25/the-death-of-a-retailer/):\n\n> If you are a person of a certain age in Silicon Valley, you have a Fry’s story. I said hello to Andy Bechtolsheim while walking the aisles. And there were others. We have all hit up one of the Fry’s stores at an ungodly hour to find a component or just because we couldn’t sleep. During the internet bubble, I ended up in Fry’s Palo Alto store on a shopping spree with folks who would eventually become my sources. It was the only way for them to loosen up. \n\nR.I.P. Fry's! 🪦",
