# Look! Up in the sky! Itsits its an amazing optics display - Host: [blogs.discovermagazine.com](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/hosts/blogs.discovermagazine.com/) - Saved: November 1, 2012 (2012-11-01T15:16:23Z) - Record: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/8d79878e7a41/ - JSON: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/8d79878e7a41.json ## From the page (probably an excerpt, not Jamie's words) The Sun is the bright blob near the horizon. Its circled by the 22 halo, a fairly common optical effect in the winter; I see dozens every season. On either side of the Sun are parhelia, nicknamed sundogs. Those are the teardrop-shaped rainbows. Sometimes, as seen here, these stretch out into long streamers called parhelic circles. They are parallel to the horizon but in this wide-angle shot the shape is distorted, bending them up. ## Facts - Kind: [Page](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/kinds/page/) ## Same host - [What the hell were we thinking?](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/2c3f4d0559aa/) (blogs.discovermagazine.com, August 4, 2010) - [Penn and Teller take on vaccines](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/d3b4cefa0ae2/) (blogs.discovermagazine.com, September 3, 2010) - [Will the New Congress Subpoena Climate Scientists?](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/386327e88bcd/) (blogs.discovermagazine.com, November 22, 2010) - [Robert Krulwich on the future of journalism](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/5d1229512ced/) (blogs.discovermagazine.com, May 15, 2011) - [Robert Krulwich on the future of journalism](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/dffa6b17ea44/) (blogs.discovermagazine.com, November 7, 2014) ## Saved the same week - [Open Wireless Movement](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/fd4c1e6b92ff/) (openwireless.org, October 31, 2012) - [Python-amazon-simple-product-api](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/69f6a4925885/) (github.com, October 31, 2012) - [McSweeneys Internet Tendency: Signs Above My Halloween Candy: 19962006.](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/7c1e37c7f556/) (mcsweeneys.net, October 31, 2012) - [Welcome to Jinja2](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/95cc048bd915/) (jinja.pocoo.org, November 1, 2012) - [Anonymous Analytics](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/eaabcbe390f4/) (anonanalytics.com, November 1, 2012) ## Elsewhere - Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/11/01/look-up-in-the-sky-its-its-its-an-amazing-optics-display/
