# Why You Should Stop Reading News - Host: [fs.blog](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/hosts/fs.blog/) - Saved: October 7, 2021 (2021-10-08T01:15:03Z) - Record: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/d296caa75064/ - JSON: https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/d296caa75064.json ## What Jamie wrote I’m a big fan of [Cal Newport](https://www.calnewport.com)'s approach to news and practice it myself. I do value being informed, but I don't need to be hyper informed. There is a very real limit to the value of continual news, and being thoughtful on how you limit incoming news is important. And, just as Facebook and social media have figured out how to grab your attention by the scruff of the neck and never let go, so have media companies. Here is what I do: 1. I subscribe (pay for) three news sources: International, National, and Local. 2. I do NOT install any apps or allow any push notifications from these services. 3. I consume the vast majority of the content from these news sources via their email services, where I can read it on my time and without the web of distractions around it. Works great for me. ## Facts - Kind: [Page](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/kinds/page/) ## Appears in - [WT198: Weekly Thing #198 / Facebook, News, Kyiv](https://weekly.thingelstad.com/archive/198/), Featured ## Same host - [Why Life Can’t Be Simpler](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/fba3671d0374/) (fs.blog, October 15, 2020) - [The Focus to Say No](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/752a32b70884/) (fs.blog, February 4, 2021) - [The OODA Loop: How Fighter Pilots Make Fast and Accurate Decisions](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/39d1771ba3d6/) (fs.blog, March 18, 2021) - [How to Think: The Skill You've Never Been Taught - Farnam Street](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/7052fd41189c/) (fs.blog, December 29, 2021) - [The Wrong Side of Right - Farnam Street](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/e1c51ee45a4d/) (fs.blog, January 10, 2022) ## Saved the same week - [Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen details company's misleading efforts on 60 Minutes - CBS News](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/b0e48f12a79f/) (cbsnews.com, October 7, 2021) - [Letterloop: The Newsletter for Friends & Family](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/296a70f6dcd6/) (letterloop.co, October 7, 2021) - [How to Act Like the CEO when You’re Not | Leadership Freak](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/a97147030c80/) (leadershipfreak.blog, October 7, 2021) - [FoundationDB: A Distributed Unbundled Transactional Key Value Store](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/5c7dd828bf89/) (micahlerner.com, October 7, 2021) - [Facebook Political Problems – Stratechery by Ben Thompson](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/6d7072b9434f/) (stratechery.com, October 7, 2021) ## Elsewhere - Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://fs.blog/2013/12/stop-reading-news/
