As negotiating leverage. Once youre a successful, non-commodity writer that is, a writer whose mere name can sell books and whose work cant be freely interchanged in the publishers catalog or on the booksellers shelf with another writers work copyright becomes a moderately useful tool for extracting funds from publishers. Copyright becomes a productive club-with-a-nail-through-it with which to threaten publishers who might consider publishing a well-known writers work without her permission. Likewise, copyright is a useful tool for publishers to use in threatening each other, should one publisher take it into his head to copy a competitors copyrighted books and sell them. Because of this, a successful writer can even auction her copyrights off between more than one publisher. ## Facts - Kind: [Page](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/kinds/page/) ## Same host - [Cory Doctorow: Persuasion, Adaptation, and the Arms Race for Your Attention – Locus Online](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/1a5755df3d09/) (locusmag.com, January 12, 2018) ## Saved the same week - [Degradable HTML5 audio and video Plugin](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/821c9d16c2f6/) (soukie.net, January 2, 2011) - [Shirky and Bady: 2010′s best Wikileaks coverage](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/8e4e300738e3/) (bracken.wordpress.com, January 2, 2011) - [Why EL PAÍS chose to publish the leaks](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/c3bdef2288e5/) (elpais.com, January 2, 2011) - [How Twitter Uses NoSQL](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/b68ee049f554/) (readwriteweb.com, January 2, 2011) - [Wikipedia Raises $16M in Site's Shortest Fundraiser Yet](https://links.thingelstad.xyz/links/1b5c0c11f2fb/) (pcmag.com, January 2, 2011) ## Elsewhere - Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.locusmag.com/Perspectives/2011/01/cory-doctorow-net-neutrality-for-writers-its-all-about-the-leverage/
