I've been playing with a number of Web3 applications and using a name for your Ethereum wallet makes everything much easier to use. I registered thingelstad.eth and a handful of other names on ENS. I also registered thingelstad.xyz, which is a DNS name but registered on ENS as well. This announcement extends the trust model that ENS built for .xyz and extends it to other DNS top-level domains. The DNSSEC requirements in the step-by-step guide are a little challenging, but only because many DNS providers doin't support the specific requirements. The comparison to ENS registration is a very good read because there are still good reasons to use .eth as well. DNS is centrally controlled, and if some entity could make up a reason to remove my rights to thingelstad.com they could. However, that isn't possible with thingelstad.eth, which is owned in my wallet and is an asset (technically it is an NFT!).
This is a good step towards merging web3 concepts into the existing web. DNS and ENS collaborating, and then getting better wallet integration in browsers, creates a pretty amazing on-ramp for crypto powered capabilities.
