I enjoy that Buterin chooses to write long form blog posts and eschews little quips on social media. He thinks deeply about these topics and his perspective is always enlightening. Here he dives into Crypto Cities and goes through some specific experiments that cities could try.
I would argue that there are two distinct categories of blockchain ideas that make sense:
- Using blockchains to create more trusted, transparent and verifiable versions of existing processes.
- Using blockchains to implement new and experimental forms of ownership for land and other scarce assets, as well as new and experimental forms of democratic governance.
He dives into City Coins with more depth and the way he frames it up seems like a pretty interesting idea. The parallel to home ownership, and lowering the barriers to participate in the equity of the community you are part of, all seem compelling. He also shares some cautions as well.
